Traveler’s Guide

General Immigration Requirements

All visitors must have a valid passport or travel document. It is recommended that the passport be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into the country, although some sources indicate that a validity of at least three months is sufficient. To avoid any inconvenience, it is best to have the longest validity possible.

Depending on your nationality, you may need an entry visa. Costa Rica classifies countries into four groups for visa purposes. Many countries in the Americas and Europe do not require a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 or 180 days. However, it is your responsibility to verify this information.

All visitors are required to have an outbound ticket (plane, bus, or boat) proving that they will leave Costa Rica within the timeframe set by immigration authorities. Failure to present this ticket may result in denial of entry.

Immigration authorities may request proof that you have sufficient financial means to support your stay in the country.

Specific Requirements

Generally, citizens of these countries do not need a visa for short stays for tourism or business purposes (such as attending a conference). The maximum stay allowed is often 90 or 180 days, but this is determined by the immigration officer upon your arrival, who will stamp your passport with the authorized departure date.

This is an important health requirement. If you are coming from certain South American countries (such as Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, among others) or Africa, you must present an international vaccination certificate against yellow fever. The vaccine must have been administered at least 10 days prior to travel.

Additional Recommendations

It is recommended to carry photocopies of your passport and other important documents, and to keep them separately.

While not a mandatory immigration requirement, it is strongly advised to obtain travel insurance that covers medical and emergency expenses. Access to medical care for tourists can be costly.

Be aware that there are restrictions on what you can bring into the country, such as weapons, certain fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products.

Check if there are customs or health forms you must complete online before your arrival. Some authorities may require this to streamline the airport process.
